ABOUT ME

Happy Birthday

by Jordan D. White

Wax-work Theme H (Happy Birthday) - 11-25-02

This one was named and conceived in honor of my lovely wife's birthday two days ago, but it's not about her at all. It's also not about the website. It does involve wax, but it's a 'real' song. The music is all synthesized through my computer and keyboard and the lovely program "Encore". I sang the vocals. Not too exciting on the technical front this month, I guess. I think I made up for it lyrically, though. I am really proud of this one in that respect. The chorus, of course, came to me first (bringing the wax connection) and then I went back and wrote the verses. Its a song about double unrequited love. "I like you, you like him," type of deal. The lead becomes very desperate. I like songs of desperation. Melodically and musically it sounds pretty cool. I think it owes a bit to Oingo Boingo, musically... not entirely though. I'm not really sure where this all came from. The recording itself, being all synth, is the weak point.

Lyrics:
I know that when your birthday is here
It is the big chance you've been waiting for all year, and
I know that when your party's begun
I'll be the first one there and my presents the biggest one
But even though I'm always right by your punch bowl
I'm not the one whose entrance warrants a drum roll
I don't like when you're looking at him
You get this big fat stupid looking ear-to-ear grin and
I know that longing look in your eyes
Saying if he don't know doesn't mean you can't fantasize
But when the lights off and they bring out desert then
You pause and smile and my heart won't stop hurting

Happy Birthday, come on, blow out the candles
You're taking too long deciding what wish to make
Happy Birthday, come on, blow out the candles
Before the wax drips down and ruins the cake
Because nobody like eating those wax drips
Go on and do it, we all know what your wish is

I go to you, a card in my hand
But you say "Wish me luck," and head over where he stands and
You go to him and smile and chat
While I'm just standing here in my conical party hat
If only I'd said out loud how I feel for you
But Hallmark says it so much better than I do
I know you want us just to be friends
But how could you ask him to help clean when this all ends and
I don't believe, you forgot so soon
Who put your streamers up and who helped blow up your balloons
Who brought the chips and dip and soda and brownies?
It wasn't him, it was me, me, me, me, me, me!

Happy Birthday, come on, blow out the candles
You're taking too long deciding what wish to make
Happy Birthday, come on, blow out the candles
Before the wax drips down and ruins the cake
Because nobody like eating those wax drips
Go on and do it, we all know what your wish is

Blow out the candles
Before the wax drips down
Nobody likes those drips
Blow out the candles
